ibiza-limited-edition
Ibiza

Caravaggio is the king of still life. He's really all anyone should aspire to. With white paper as my foundation, I attempt the chiaroscuro that he dominated so magnificently, no deep background for one's imagination to hide in its black, but I need this piece to live in the daylight. More perceptibly, in the setting of daylight. A setting that tingles you with its familiarity but gives little specifics away. Just a tingle, just a bead of moisture accumulating, not yet three-dimensional, not yet a bead of sweat but moisture coming together, enough to generate a small surface to reflect the sun's burn.

To consume this presentation, you need to climb down rocks, you need to time it right so you can reserve yourself and your lover a space on the sharp boulders in front of the water before it's too crowded, but don't be so premature that your ice melts before the sun dilutes into the horizon. Set and setting, coined by Timothy Leary in the context of psychedelic experiences, but I think it can be replicated with imagery and the efficacy of such imagery in igniting something within. "Set" being your mindset going in, "setting" being the physical and social environment around you. His argument was that both determine the quality of the experience more than the substance itself. This is why, against the Mediterranean, the cantaloupe crunches with that much more wetness into your mouth, the sweetness flavoured with the scent of sunscreen recently applied. The ham really is better, it's got its own name and identifier that declares it so. But it's improved yet again, impossibly so, as you sit on an island in the Balearic Sea, with the sun deep into its venture for the day, skin tight, skin tinted and eyelashes crusted. With either the knowledge of nothing to do the following day or, better yet, not even the thought has entered your mind. This is presence. This is when your sensations are so charged that you need no future planning.

This is months, maybe years of forgoing days off, handing your time to the boss, collecting coins and spilling them on the prices that have been increased for your pleasure, for your understanding of where the really good spots are. You are not alone. These places have been proven decade over decade, and whilst perhaps the hip part squeezes somewhere new around the coast, leaving behind its mega clubs and apartment blocks, the same joys have been repeatedly milked. The same melon has been cut, and the same people have paid too much for its pleasure. Because pleasure is what it is, nothing worth having is easy, it's simple, but you are not simple, getting here was not simple, but God, it looks good. These days under a reddening sun make up for winters past and hearts that were once broken. The jamón sweats underneath your salty fingers, and your ice still holds its diminishing form in your wine. Thick glass and rocks, as uncomfortable as they are glamorous. You are glamorous, this is Ibiza, this is 6 pm, and the day may be gone, but your life is long, you're now part of the history that will forget you, and you will not forget it.
