My Father taught me when I was learning how to make toast to his liking, that it was enough butter when he could see his teeth marks after he’s taken a bite. That’s a cheese amount of butter, so you know. It’s been a lifelong sickness of perfecting the ratio of butter to its cousin, whatever it shall be for the day, potatoes, sauce, frying, but most importantly, bread. The bread that is served alongside your meal in France, is, without embarrassment, likely my favorite part of the meal. Why order then? You don’t get the bread if you don’t order. Unashamed to ask for basket refills, butter top-ups, and extra salt to add atop, I think of myself as either a glutton or connoisseur of the bread-to-butter relationship. A joyous way to start a meal and often a punishing way to finish a meal should one already be full. Bon appétit!
